Royal Melbourne a mere taster

"Neville says I have gone from a prize-winning rooster to a feather duster all in one go."

Thankfully Lorraine Mawson has as good a sense of humour as her husband, insisting such a quote be printed.

This couple of pillars of the Euroa community spent a lazy late afternoon on Saturday, 4 October strolling the exhibits of the Royal Melbourne Show looking out for talent from Strathbogie Shire - notwithstanding their own.

Lorraine has been entering her baking delights into the Royal (and the Euroa Ag' Show) seemingly 'forever' and winning often.

Her and Neville spied also the modest but highly commended Carlie Mackelmann leading a few cattle in the main ring.

Carlie had just been awarded the Matthew George Young Stockman's award for 2025.

The prize includes $5000 for Carlie to study overseas.

Closer to town, locals can - when buying their next Euroa Gazette - glance into the glass topped counter at the Newsagency to see Lorraine's Best in Show ribbon for her 2024 muffins.

Sadly the muffins are long eaten.

Not devoured yet, however, is Lorraine's delightful butter cake which was still on display in Melbourne at time of printing.

The signature piece was awarded second place which - despite the feather duster analogy - is no mean feat.

Although Lorraine normally does ten or so entries at the Euroa event, she wants locals to pump up the jam (and baking) entries.
